Why Visit Ghent?

Ghent is one of my favorite cities in Belgium, and I think it’s often overlooked for more popular spots like Bruges or Brussels.

But Ghent has its own magic, walking through its medieval streets feels like stepping into a Harry Potter movie set.

The city has stunning canals, grand old buildings, and a thriving arts scene that make it both charming and lively. My recommendation would be to visit the Gravensteen Castle.

What to See in Ghent?

Gravensteen Castle

Start your visit at Gravensteen, the "Castle of the Counts," a medieval fortress built in the 12th century. It’s one of the best-preserved castles in Europe, complete with a moat and an impressive collection of torture devices. Read more about it.

St. Bavo’s Cathedral and The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb

This stunning cathedral is home to one of the world’s most famous paintings, The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers. Known for its detail and rich symbolism, this artwork is a masterpiece of the Northern Renaissance and a must-see for art lovers.

The Graslei and Korenlei Canals

The historic Graslei and Korenlei streets along the River Leie are the heart of Ghent’s Old Town and offer picture-perfect canal views. Lined with medieval guild houses, cafés, and restaurants, it’s a great spot for a stroll or a canal boat tour.

Belfry of Ghent

The 91-meter-tall Belfry of Ghent is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers panoramic views of the city. Climb to the top for a small fee to see the famous dragon weather vane and hear the carillon bells that have been ringing over Ghent for centuries.
